Box Score BATON ROUGE, La. – Moved up to the No. 2 spot in the batting order,
Collin Morrill did not disappoint, going 3-for-5 with a double and RBI and
Devin Morrill went 2-for-4 with two RBI as the University of New Orleans (17-17) improved to .500 with a 7-5 victory over Southern University (7-21) Wednesday evening at Lee-Hines Field.
Last night,
Devin Morrill drove in his first run of the season and tonight, had a season-high performance at the dish.
Collin Morrill's return to the two-hole was successful as the first baseman collected three hits for the third time this season.
The series sweep of the Jaguars concluded the 10-game road trip and the Privateers dominated, going 8-2.
Strikeouts came early and often for the pitching staff as
Kyle Arjona,
Matthew Gillis,
John Barr,
Mathew Oset and
Reeves Martin combined for 17 punchouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Southern capitalized on two defensive miscues to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Privateers responded with two in the second to tie the ballgame on three hits.
Beau Bratton began the frame with an infield single and scored on Morrill's base knock to short. After moving into scoring position on a passed ball, D. Morill swiped third and came around to score on another passed ball.
Pearce Howard and D. Morrill collected back-to-back base hits with one out in the fourth and
Scott Crabtree brought home Howard to give UNO its first lead of the game, 3-2. An error allowed the Jaguars to tie the game in the bottom frame at 3-3.
A four-spot in the fifth allowed the Privateers to regain the lead 7-3 on two hits and two Southern errors.
The Jaguars threatened in the sixth, but Barr came in and struck out two to limit the damage and preserve a UNO lead (7-5).
The bullpen did not allow a hit after Wheatley's infield single with one out in the sixth.
PITCHING
Arjona struck out five in 4.0 innings and allowed three runs – one earned. Barr tossed 2.0 scoreless frames and punched out three in relief of Gillis. Barr improved to 4-2 on the year. Oset struck out all three batters and needed just 16 pitches in a shutout eighth. Martin shut the door with a perfect ninth for his fifth save of 2018 (three strikeouts). Tyler Robinson (1-4) was tagged with the loss after allowing the seven runs – five earned.
