McKinney, Texas- The youthful University of New Orleans golf team wrapped up competition Wednesday at the 2018 Southland Conference Men's Golf Tournament at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney Texas.
Windy, rainy and cool weather conditions made for high scores from everyone on the course.
Jackson Smith had the best round of the day for New Orleans with an 8-over 80, despite going 4-over on the final two holes of the day. The Tyler, Texas native had a three-day total of 244, 28-over-par.
"Jackson sort of typified what we did as a team," said head golf coach
Jeff Lorio. "He got off to a slow start but then he got it together in the middle rounds. He finished double-bogey, double-bogey. He couldn't quite get into the house but I'm proud of the effort. He played well."
Max Hellstrom was one shot back with a 9-over-par, 81. Hellstrom joined smith with the lowest three-day total for the Privateers at 28-over.
Ulisess da Toledo carded a 15-over 87 today. His 54-hole total of 248 is 32-over for the tourney.
Parker Johnson came in at 17-over 89 after round three. The Baton Rouge freshman completed the three days at 47-over-par, 263.
Brady Bennett, a freshman from Zachary, Louisiana, shot 91 during the final round. He finished at 54-over 256 after three days of competition.
"The good thing is these guys are all coming back next year and this was a good experience for them. They realize what we need to do to get better. All of these kids are hard workers and competitors and they are not happy with the way we finished. They want to get better and I think we will," said Lorio.
