Box Score Beaumont, Texas. – Brayson Smith was spectacular out of the bullpen in the first game of a Southland Conference double header at Vincent-Beck Stadium Sunday, tossing 4.2 innings of two-hit ball. And
Pearce Howard played hero in the twelfth in game two as the University of New Orleans (16-16, 7-8 Southland) swept the doubleheader 6-2 and 2-0 against Lamar University (7-25, 3-12 Southland).
In game two of the doubleheader
Jay Robinson had the play of the year so far, as Lamar had a chance to win the game with a runner on third in the ninth but Robinson unleashed a bullet to catcher
Beau Bratton to cut down the winning run and send the game to extras.
Owen Magee broke out with a 3-4 performance in game one and a 2-5 showing in game two with two runs scored.
FIRST GAME
Owen Magee led the charge at the plate going 3-4 and scoring a run.
Cody Ducote and
Devin Morrill both tallied two hits in the win. Five other batters had a hit in as the Privateers took game one 6-2.
RECORDS
Brayson Smith was outstanding out of the 'pen going 4.2 innings scoreless innings striking out four to earn his first win of the season. Cardinal lefty Jack Dallas (1-2) was tagged with the loss after going 2.1 innings give up one unearned run on two hits.
UNO starter
Kyle Arjona did not factor in the decision after going 2.1 innings giving up one run on three hits while striking out two.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lamar jumped out to an early 1-0 led with a run in the first, but the Privateers knotted the game up in the second on three straight base hits by D. Morrill, Robinson, and Willis.
UNO took its first lead of the weekend in the sixth after
Devin Morrill hit a single thought the right side, and two batters later came home on a Willis SAC fly for a 2-1 lead.
The teams traded runs in the eighth, but New Orleans put the game away in ninth with three runs for the 6-2 victory.
SECOND GAME
Magee led the way in game two going 2-5 at the dish.
Collin Morrill,
Jacob McFadden, Bratton, Ducote, and Howard each tallied a hit in the win.
RECORDS
John Barr (3-2) earned the win out of the 'pen tossing four scoreless innings, striking out three. Lamar reliever Jace Campbell (0-6) was tagged with the loss after giving up the two runs in the twelfth.
Reeves Martin (4) put the game away in the twelfth for the save, striking out a pair of Cardinals.
John Michael Stephens went 4.2 innings of three-hit ball striking out five, but did not factor in the decision.
Matthew Gillis and
Rafe Schindler had scoreless outings in the victory. The five arms combined for a total of 11 punchouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UNO scored a pair of runs in the twelfth as Magee led off the inning with a single and moved to third on an
Orynn Veillon double. They both scored on the aforementioned Howard double to give the Privateers a 2-0 lead and the series victory.
NEXT UP
New Orleans heads back to Tulane for game three of the Pelican Cup first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. The Privateers will be presented the trophy and a MVP will be announced after the game.
