Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Cardinals took their first lead of the ballgame in the seventh inning and did just enough to clinch the series win over the Privateers Saturday, defeating the University of New Orleans (14-12, 3-8 Southland) 3-2 at Sullivan Field sponsored by H-E-B.
Chris Turpin recorded his fourth quality start of the season and
Luther Woullard and
Gaige Howard posted two hits apiece in the loss to the University of the Incarnate Word (18-10, 7-4 Southland). Tyler Miller regrouped after a rough first inning in the seventh. The Privateers stranded nine on base.
Collin Morrill led off the game with a double and small ball brought home the game's first run to put UNO in front 1-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Turpin tossed a scoreless first but UIW mustered a run in the second on an RBI groundout. Turpin induced a 3-6-3 double play to end the second as
Scott Crabtree turned two.
Tyler Perez and Turpin matched one another with zeros on the board and Turpin worked out of a two-out error and balk to strand two Cardinals to end the fifth tied at 1-1.
Miller entered the game in the seventh after Perez gave the Cardinals six innings of one-run ball.
Salo Iza singled and came around to score after Morrill, who reached on an error, slide into third below the force out to put UNO ahead 2-1.
Perez allowed seven hits, but the right-hander struck out nine in the no-decision.
In the bottom frame, two hits down the lines gave UIW its first lead of the game 3-2. Shea Gutierrez hit a triple that stayed fair down the right field line, and Sean Arnold followed with a double down the left field line to put the Cardinals in front.
Reeves Martin entered the game and ended the seventh with one pitch.
Turpin's line was complete as the right-hander was solid throughout despite being on the hook. Turpin went 6.2 and allowed three runs while punching out four.
In the bottom of the eighth, Martin needed just seven pitches, including two strikeouts, to end the frame.
WIN-LOSS RECORD
Miller earned the win in 3.0 innings of work, improving to 4-3 on the year. Turpin fell to 3-1 in 2019 despite posting his fourth consecutive quality start.
