ABOUT SOUTHERN
- Southern has clinched their division of the SWAC with a league record of 18-6. The Jaguars engineered a turnaround from last place in 2018 and being selected last ahead of the '19 campaign.
- Kerrick Jackson is in his second season as head coach after taking over for Roger Cador. Jackson's first season saw just nine wins but this year has already been a different story with 14 wins to date. While Jackson is newer to the head coaching duties, this is not his first stint in Louisiana. Among his stops before coming to Southern, Jackson was a pitching coach at Nicholls. He also spent five seasons as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Missouri and helped guide the Tigers to their first ever Big 12 baseball championship in 2012. His '12 recruiting class ranked 24th in the nation.
- As a team, Southern is hitting .310 which ranks second in the SWAC only behind Jackson State. Their 90 doubles leads the conference. They've also racked up 127 stolen bases which places them third in the nation. The Jaguars also rank in the top ten in the country (8th) in triples with 20.
- Tyler LaPorte has produced 82 hits this season, ranking him third in the country in that statistic. His .380 batting average ranks him 37th in the nation. LaPorte has gone 3-for-9 over the first two games against the Privateers this season. He also pitched a scoreless inning on the mound against New Orleans in Baton Rouge.
- Javeyan Williams has been perfect on the base paths this year. Williams has attempted 25 stolen bases and has not been caught in 2019. His stolen base total ranks 24th in the nation.
- The Jaguars have had their fair share of success against in-state schools. Southern owns wins over LSU, New Orleans, Northwestern State, and Nicholls.
