GREENSBORO, N.C. –
Salo Iza was announced as the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove winner at second base on Wednesday evening. The New Orleans Privateers second baseman became the first in program history to garner the national honor.
Iza was a stalwart at second for New Orleans. The junior transfer was in on 39 double plays, fourth most in the Southland. He helped vault the Privateers from 13
th in double plays turned a year ago to second in 2019 with 50 total twin killings. Only HBU had more double plays turned among Southland schools.
"To have a guy like that be the first in our program to win that award, that speaks volumes," said Coach
Blake Dean. "The great thing about it is he didn't have a great year offensively but he never let it affect his defense. It speaks to his work ethic and what he's capable of."
One of three Privateers to start every game this season, Iza committed just four errors in 265 total chances and had a .985 fielding percentage. He went 34 of his last 35 games without committing an error.
Iza was seventh in the Southland Conference in assists on the season with 147. Iza had a season-high seven assists against Yale on Mar. 2. His season best in putouts was eight, recorded on May 11 against HBU. Iza recorded at least five assists in six games this year.
Two Southland student-athletes were represented on the team. Carson Maxwell of McNeese won the honor at third base.
