NEW ORLEANS –
Reeves Martin became the third pitcher to be drafted in as many years when he was selected in the 21
st round by the Seattle Mariners on the third day of the MLB Draft, which took place Wednesday afternoon.
Martin has already won a collection of awards in the postseason after a fantastic junior year that saw him as one of the top closers in the country. Reeves became the first All-American in program history since 2008 when he was named Third Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball.
He was also Relief Pitcher of the Year and First Team All-Southland after a season that saw him go 4-0 with a 1.03 ERA. Martin collected 14 saves, which broke the single season school record. He also broke the career saves and appearances record during his 2019 campaign.
Martin also became the 90
th student-athlete to be drafted in program history. He will join former teammates,
Bryan Warzek, Shawn Semple, and
Kyle Arjona who are all in the professional ranks. Warzek was drafted in the sixth round (2018) and Semple went in the 11
th round in 2017. Arjona signed as an undrafted free agent last summer.
Reeves also becomes the third Privateer all-time to be drafted by Seattle. In 1981, the Mariners drafted a pair of former Privateers: Ronn Dixon (11
th round) and Howard Brodsky (22
nd round).
FROM HEAD COACH BLAKE DEAN:
"Getting guys drafted shows your program is going in the right direction. Speaking for Reeves has been a bulldog for our team and what he did this year was special. With the tradition and history, this season is something we'll remember and hopefully one day he'll be pitching in the big leagues. We appreciate everything he did for the university."
FROM PITCHING COACH RUDY DARROW:
"I tell you what. The UNO baseball program is thankful for
Reeves Martin. He's been a part of so many wins and if we didn't have him, we wouldn't have the records we've had especially this year. It was game over when he came in and his work ethic is second to none. I'm just grateful I got the chance to coach him. To see how far he's come and the knowledge he's gained, I'm so proud of him."
