Baseball Top-50 List Week in Review: Week 1

TOP 50 LIST

The New Orleans Privateers Top-50 list for the baseball program began its unveil this week. The positions revealed encompassed all catchers and first basemen. Every week until the beginning of the 2020 regular season, players who made the list will be revealed.
 
CATCHERS
A distinguished group of four catchers made the list which was voted on by a panel of 10 members. Leroy Weimer, Greg Battistella, Josh Vander Hey, and Pat Cummings were all selected as part of the prestigious team. Below are some highlights:
 
- Weimer: Fourth in career RBI in program history & a .362 career hitter. 394 total bases is tied for 6th in program history.
 
- Battistella: Two-time All-American South selection. Hit .342 as a junior and .320 as a senior
 
- Vander Hey: 13 homers, 21 doubles, 76 RBI in lone season with the Privateers. First Team All-Sun Belt and All-Region
 
- Cummings: Member of '84 College World Series team and made Regional All-Tournament Team. 113 walks drawn in two seasons.
 
FIRST BASEMEN
Five first basemen were selected to the honorary team: Nick Schwaner, Mark Higgins, John Schaive, Brian Traxler, and Wayne Harer.
 
Three of those five were drafted by Major League Baseball organizations. Higgins and Traxler both went on to play in the big leagues.
 
- Schwaner: Remains top-five in program history in hits, doubles, homers, and total bases
 
- Higgins: Set single-season records in homers (24), RBI (72) and total bases (195) in 1984
 
- Schaive: Led Privateers in homers as a senior in 1980 with 12. Also hit .316 during Sun Belt championship run in '79.
 
- Traxler: Racked up 439 total bases, 206 RBI, and 49 homers in Privateer career. Drafted by the Dodgers in 1988.
 
- Harer: 93 hits in two seasons. Hit .369, third highest career batting average in program history.
