FRISCO, Texas – New Orleans women's basketball senior forward
Asia Woods was named the Southland Conference Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week after she led the Privateers to a perfect 2-0 record with a monster week.
The Houston, Texas native started the week off hot with 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting to go along with nine rebounds, five assists and a perfect 4-for-4 mark from the charity stripe in an 85-73 win over Central Arkansas on Wednesday.
She followed it up with an even bigger stat line in a 61-57 victory over UIW on Saturday. Woods recorded 20 points, 15 rebounds (with an almost unheard of 13 alone on the offensive end), five assists and two steals. It was her sixth double-double of the season.
In total, she averaged 19 points on 62.5 percent shooting, 12 rebounds and five assists during the two wins. Her 13 offensive rebounds against UIW were the most recorded by a Privateer since the team has joined the Southland Conference.
It is the third time this season that a Privateer has captured the conference weekly honor as Woods joins senior guard
Rehema Franklin who won the award back on Nov. 18 and Dec. 30. It is also the first time New Orleans has collected three Southland Athlete of the Week awards in a single-season since the 2016-17 campaign.
Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school's sports information director. Voting for one's own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of the ballots.
The Privateers have an upcoming bye on Wednesday, which means the next time the squad will suit up will be with their road trip out to McNeese on Saturday Feb. 22. Tip off is set for 1 PM at the H&PE Arena.
