NEW ORLEANS
– As the evening wore on, the Privateers bats were just getting started. New Orleans had opened up the 2017 season with a 3-0 weekend at the Andre Dawson Classic. Then came the tallest of orders: #2 ranked LSU came to Maestri Field.

THE BEGINNING
The Tigers put their best foot forward early. Behind starter, Caleb Gilbert and three home runs (all solo shots), LSU built a 6-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning at Maestri Field. What happened next was a whirlwind of line drives, runs, and ultimately euphoria for the men donned in navy blue.

HOW THE TABLES TURNED
Samuel Capielano ripped a triple on a 1-2 pitch against reliever, Hunter Kiel. The next two batters were retired though and LSU threatened to get out with just one run allowed (Capielano scored on an RBI groundout).

Then the onslaught really ramped up. The next six batters accounted for four doubles and two walks. When the dust settled, New Orleans, for the first time on the night had a lead at 7-6.

TIGERS TAMED
After a quick sixth inning in the field, the Privateers went right back to work at the plate. They notched four more runs to stretch the lead to 11-6. Two batters into the inning, Tristan Clarke cranked a solo shot. Orynn Veillon (RBI double) and Owen Magee (two-run single) continued to pad the lead.

Meanwhile, William Griffin was the stabilizer on the mound. He threw four innings and held a potent LSU lineup in check. His final line: 4.0 innings pitched, one earned run (two total) allowed.

RACING OUT THE GATE
The Privateers parlayed that win over LSU into a 9-3 start to the year. The Privateers went on to advance to the Southland Tournament as a 7-seed where they eliminated 2-seed Southeastern. The Privateers ended up with 30 wins on the season.

Another one of those was an extra inning win (7-4) in 15 innings at Alex Box Stadium. It was the first time since 2008 that New Orleans beat LSU twice in a season.
