NEW ORLEANS – Former Privateers women's basketball student-athlete, Dr. Robin Martin will be one of five alumni honored at the Distinguished Alumni Gala on November 4 at the National WWII Museum U.S. Freedom Pavilion. The ceremony will begin at 7 p.m.

Martin played for the Privateers from 1989-93 and earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in education from UNO. A Knoxville, Tenn. native, Martin helped lead the Privateers to 38 wins in her last two seasons on the Lakefront.

"Robin couldn't be a more deserving person for this award," said Privateers women's basketball head coach,
Keeshawn Davenport. "She has truly distinguished herself in the area of sports for women. She is a trailblazer and has set a great example for those of us who are following her whether we desire to be coaches or administrators. She has left her IMPACT in many places and is well deserving of this honor. She represents our university in an awesome way wherever she goes and I'm happy they have selected her for this award."

For her career, Martin played in 113 games and scored 925 points on 50.4 percent shooting. Martin also averaged 5.6 rebounds per game and added 106 total blocks. Martin is currently ninth in program history in blocked shots.

Martin is deputy director of strategy, planning and management for the postsecondary success team at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. She provides leadership and oversight of a $123 million strategic fund designed to transform colleges and universities across the country. Martin also operates Navigating Courage, Inc., a full-service leadership development and executive coaching consulting company.

"Robin was a very special player and is a special person. I'm glad that she is receiving this award and distinction," said her collegiate head coach, Joey Favaloro who coached Martin for all four of her seasons with the Privateers.

For her career, Martin is one of 12 Privateers who have reached at least 600 rebounds. She also tied a program record when she made 14 free throws in a game against Louisiana Tech in December of 1991.
