FRISCO, Texas – Two Privateer baseball seniors earned Southland All-Academic honors, the conference office announced on Tuesday morning.
Gaige Howard and
Darren Willis both made the Southland All-Academic second team.
Both in their final seasons on the Lakefront, Howard and Willis had strong seasons on the field and in the classroom.
A graduating senior in Hotel Restaurant and Tourism Administration, Howard has a cumulative GPA of 3.58 for his time at New Orleans. On the field, he hit .291 with 13 doubles and 37 RBI and earned a Southland Hitter of the Week honor.
Willis ended his stint with the Privateers with a bang, breaking the record for most RBI in a Southland Tournament game with eight. In the classroom, Willis, who is also a graduating senior, earned a 3.40 in Psychology. This season, he hit .283 with five homers and 36 runs scored with 27 RBI.
Howard made the Southland Commissioner's List in 2019 and 2020. Willis earned that distinction every year from 2017-20.
The Privateers have had eight honored on the All-Academic team since joining the Southland in 2014. The most recent prior to this season was Reeves Martin who earned first team honors in 2019.
Colton Cowser of Sam Houston won Student-Athlete of the Year.
