HUMBLE, Tx. -
Samantha Dyson and
Vojislav Gvero placed first in the women's and men's hammer throw to kick off the
2022 Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Dyson, a junior from Punxsutawney, Pa., set the tone for day scoring the first ten points for the women with her winning throw of 50.34m. Dyson will feature in the shot put on Saturday and the Discus on Sunday.
Gvero, a senior from Belgrade, Serbia, also earned ten points for the men and secured his first win in the event as a Privateer. Gvero looks for a top eight finish in the discus on Sunday.
Not far behind Dyson in the hammer was
Addison Fraker with a sixth-place finish (43.67m) and
Karena Grigenas with an eighth place finish (42.21m). The Privateers had the most representation in this event.
Freshman
Christopher Murphy jumped to a huge PR and fifth place finish in the men's long jump with 7.38m.
To round out day one,
Mathilde Helms-Kjaer piled on an additional eight points with her second place finish in the 10,0000m with a time of 37:34.23.
Michelle Folk finished eighth in her debut in the event with a time of 40:05.10.
Seniors Ryan Guenther and
Kristian Oatman placed 10
th (32:30.37) and 11
th (32:41.98) in the men's 10,000m respectively.
"I am really proud of the way the entire group executed on day one. Throws to jumps to distance --- all competitors today went in with a purpose and got the job done," says Assistant Coach
Brock Moreaux.
"That is the exact momentum that we needed headed into day two where we will have a lot of exciting prelims. The goal stays the same tomorrow, to go into every event with purpose and execute. If we do that we will be a tough team to beat going into the finals!"
Tomorrow, the Privateers prepare to bring the heat in the sprint events beginning with the women's 100m dash, featuring
Vivette Green,
Aryn Pitre, and Brianna Bell.
