NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team will face a stern midweek test on Tuesday night when they make the Mardi Gras trip to face the #18 Southern Miss Golden Eagles at Pete Taylor Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
PROBABLE STARTERS
RHP
Jose Cabrera (UNO) vs. RHP Billy Oldham (USM)
The Privateers (1-2) are coming off a tough opening weekend against Kennesaw State, the defending Atlantic Sun champions. New Orleans won the series opener but lost the last two games of the weekend.
Tyler Bischke stood out at the plate with a .545 batting average (6-of-11). He was the only Southland Conference player to hit multiple home runs in the opening weekend. Bischke also co-leads the Southland through the first weekend in total bases with 12.
Cabrera made his Privateer debut in relief last Friday. The Indiana State transfer threw an inning and gave up a run on a hit with two walks. He also had a strikeout in his first inning in a New Orleans uniform. Cabrera was an NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention at Wabash Valley CC prior to his time at Indiana State.
Miguel Useche went 4-for-10 in his first weekend of the season. The Privateers' starting catcher had two hits on Sunday, continuing off his hot finish to the 2022 season.
Kasten Furr went 4-of-13 (.308) in the opening weekend.
The win in the season opener moved
Blake Dean to 6-2 in season openers as head coach. He is now 10 wins away from reaching 200 for his career.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Southern Miss leads the all-time series 57-51 over the Privateers.
Blake Dean's two wins against the Golden Eagles have come in Hattiesburg in back-to-back seasons (2018 and 2019).
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Southern Miss remained in 18
th in the latest D1Baseball.com poll after a stirring weekend. The Golden Eagles' pitching took over as they swept Liberty. They only conceded three runs to the Flames all weekend.
Oldham threw 0.2 innings in the series finale at Liberty. He was part of a national championship team in his previous stop with Div. III Eastern Connecticut State.
