Privateers to Face Tulane in First Game of 2023 Pelican Cup

NEW ORLEANS For the fourth time since being reinstituted, the Pelican Cup will be contested between the New Orleans Privateers and the Tulane Green Wave. The first of three games this season is on Wednesday at Turchin Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Five home runs capped off back-to-back run rule wins at the Andre Dawson Classic for the Privateers. It was the second consecutive season the Privateers had consecutive run rule victories at the Classic. New Orleans (3-4) did it last season against Grambling and Alabama State.

Kasten Furr had six hits and four runs scored last weekend. Tyler Bischke continues to swing a hot bat as he has 10 hits in his first 22 at-bats this season. The pitching staff is relatively fresh as well with only four relievers used over the weekend.

There were two grand slams in the win against Alabama State hit by Jeissy De la Cruz and Jorge Tejeda. There were four grand slams hit all last season in 53 games.

The Privateers have played error free baseball in each of the last four games. Dating back to the eighth inning in the Sunday game against Kennesaw State, New Orleans has gone the last 32 innings without an error in the field. The Privateers currently have a fielding percentage of .978.

The Privateers are looking to take the Pelican Cup back from the Green Wave. Last season, Tulane won the series 2-1. Prior to that, New Orleans had the Cup every year since it returned in 2018.

Tulane (1-6) leads the all-time series 87-65. They are 42-22 all-time at home. Blake Dean is 9-6 against the Green Wave in his tenure.

This is the second midweek game for Tulane who played South Alabama on Tuesday. Brennan Lambert and Brady Marget have combined for 18 hits in 51 at-bats. The rest of the Green Wave offense is hitting .178 entering the week.
