The Privateers are coming off a resounding win on Tuesday at home when they defeated Southern Miss. Eight New Orleans pitchers combined to hold the Golden Eagles to five hits on the night while
Tyler Bischke and
Anthony Herron Jr. both hit home runs in the contest.
The win against Southern Miss was the first at home vs. the Golden Eagles since 2005. It was also the third win for Coach Dean against USM.
Speaking of home runs, the Privateers have had a knack for the long ball on the first pitch of counts. 11 of their 27 home runs have come on the first pitch of an at-bat this season.
Jack Williams and
Tod Gauthe both made their season debuts on Tuesday against Southern Miss after missing the first month of the season due to injury. Williams walked only five batters in 37.1 innings last year. Gauthe picked up his first save in a Privateer uniform last February against ULM.
As a team, the Privateers have 12 sacrifice flies this season. That total ranks them 42
nd in the country and second in the Southland only behind Northwestern State who has 13 sac fly RBI this season. Individually,
Miguel Useche leads the team in that category with three.
Since being swept in 2016 by Lamar, the series has been near even. New Orleans is 7-6 in 13 meetings against the Cardinals. Dating back to 2014, the Cardinals swept the first three series against the Privateers.
Lamar (14-6) has won 10 of their 12 games at home this season. The Cardinals pitching staff has held opponents to two or fewer runs eight times this year with one shutout. As a pitching staff, the Cardinals are 15
th in ERA at 3.43.
Ryan Snell leads the conference and is 14
th in the nation in home runs with nine. He also ranks 25
th in the nation in total bases with 63.
