Privateers Finish Second at Southland Conference Championships

FINAL RESULTS (GOLFSTAT) | FINAL RESULTS | DAY ONE RECAP | DAY TWO RECAP

SAN ANTONIO – The University of New Orleans used rounds of 290, 291 and 291 to finish in second place at the 2023 Southland Conference Golf Championship. The three round score of 872 is just outside the of the top-25 scores in school history and tied for the third best tally ever at a conference championship by the Privateers.

Grayson Gilbert earned All-Southland Tournament honors for the second straight year. Only Gilbert, Brady Bennet (5th place, 2022), who was in attendance supporting UNO at Hill Country Resort, and Markus Kreiger (tied for 5th, 2016) have finished top-five individually at a Southland tournament for New Orleans.

The senior finished his career with rounds of 71, 71, and 73. Grayson had birdies on nine, ten and eighteen today helping the Privateers stave off Lamar who was hot on their trail all afternoon. Gilbert finished tied for fourth after birdieing his last hole on the Lakefront.

Henry Augenstein also finished inside the top-10 for New Orleans after his second consecutive round of 72. Henry finished tied for 7th with a 54-hole score of 217. Augenstein made 12 birdies overall, including six on Thursday afternoon. The graduate student buried a 40-footer on 17, before closing out his UNO career with another on 18.

Mason Roberts bounced back from rough afternoon on Wednesday and finished 2-under par during the final round – a nine stroke improvement. It was the largest round-to-round improvement of anyone at the Southland Championships this year. The Texan made birdies on seven, eight, 12 and incredibly on 15 after losing his club head during his tee shot.

New Orleans led the tournament in pars as a team with 167, and Gilbert finished second in the field with 39. Augenstein's 12 birdies paced the Privateers, with Ryan Fulton and Roberts each with nine. Fulton had the lone eagle for the Privateers during round two.

The last UNO golf squad to finish with a conference tournament score better than 872 was the 2007-2008 team – the 2008 Sun Belt Conference runner-up who finished with a score of 854, 10-under par. They were also the last UNO golf team to finish in second place at a conference championship.

The Privateers finished the 2022-2023 season with an overall record of 69-50-1 (.579), a 22-3 (.880) mark against Southland schools, and a 297.2 average in stroke play. The Privateers have improved their stroke average from the previous season in five of the last six seasons under Coach Lorio.

Augusta won the Southland Championship with a three day score of 858 and the individual champion was Augusta's Stefan Jacobs who shot a 203.
