FRISCO, Texas –
Brandon Mitchell and
Mitchell Sanford swept the Southland weekly awards after their respective weekly performances. Mitchell won Pitcher of the Week while Sanford earned Hitter of the Week honors.
Mitchell earned his third Pitcher of the Week honor after going the distance once again in what turned out to be a run rule victory. The senior lefty scattered eight hits over seven innings and limited the UIW lineup to just one run in a 12-1 win during the series opener.
The complete game was Mitchell's fourth of the season. He stands second in the nation in complete games only behind Blaine Traxel of West Virginia who has five complete games. Mitchell also ranks fourth in the Southland in strikeouts.
Sanford went 7-for-13 over four games and that was with having to be lifted from two games early. The junior outfielder had four hits go for extra bases (two doubles, one triple and one home run) as the Privateers slugged their way to three wins.
For the week, Sanford drove in seven runs. That moved his RBI total to 56 which ties him for the Southland lead with Rey Mendoza of UIW. He ranks 73
rd in the nation in that category heading into the final week of the regular season.
The Privateers have now won six weekly awards. Sanford and
Tristan Moore each have won Hitter of the Week. Mitchell is a three-time winner of Pitcher of the Week honors and
Jacob Mead won the award last Monday.
