FRISCO, Texas –
Anthony Herron Jr. won the final Southland Hitter of the Week award for the regular season after capping off a big weekend with a first in his career.
The Chicago native hit for the cycle in a must win game for the New Orleans Privateers to avoid the play-in game in the Southland Tournament. New Orleans run ruled Nicholls 14-4 after eight innings to finish off the regular season with 33 wins and a 20-6 home record.
Herron doubled as part of a five-run third inning that got the Privateers their first lead of the day. He hit a liner to right-center that scored two runs and New Orleans led after that inning 5-1.
In his third at-bat, Herron singled through the right side on a 2-2 count. He then delivered what is largely considered the hardest part of the cycle to get in the sixth inning.
After Nicholls closed the Privateer lead to 5-4, Herron blistered a two-run triple into the gap in left-center which plated two runs. At the end of the inning, the Privateers were in cruise control after extending their lead to 11-4.
Herron then came up in the eighth inning and drilled a two-run homer that pushed the Privateer lead to double digits and ended the game on the run rule. It was the first cycle accomplished by a Privateer since 2018.
For the weekend, Herron went 7-for-10 against Nicholls. Herron was one of four Privateer starters to hit over .300 for the season. He ended his 2023 regular season campaign with a .317 batting average, seven homers and 35 RBI.
Herron becomes the third hitter to win the weekly award joining
Tristan Moore and
Mitchell Sanford.
