Privateers Dive Back Into Conference Play With Road Series at HCU

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers will head to Houston this weekend for another pivotal Southland Conference series as they take on the HCU Huskies at Husky Field. First pitch for the series opener is slated for 6:30 p.m. on Friday.

ROTATION
FRIDAY: UNO-RHP William Andrade vs. HCU-RHP Trent Barnes
SATURDAY: UNO-LHP Riley Marcotte vs. HCU-RHP David Lopez
SUNDAY: UNO-RHP Reid Leonard vs. HCU-TBA

The Privateers played their fifth extra inning game in their last eight contests as they took an 11-10 decision over Troy on Tuesday. New Orleans hit three home runs including a game-tying two-run homer by Eli Tidwell in the eighth. Josh Hoffmann provided the winning hit with a walk-off single.

New Orleans has scored 10 or more runs in a game 12 times this season and has gone 10-2 in those contests after their win against Troy. The Privateers enter the weekend tied for fourth in the Southland in runs scored with 242 and first in hits with 369.

Tuesday against Troy marked the seventh game this year where the Privateers hit three or more home runs. Their 46 home runs through 39 games rank third in the Southland and 59th in Division I heading into the weekend.

With the Privateers playing all conference games on weekends from here, they are two games back of the eighth spot currently held by HCU with four series remaining. New Orleans will play HCU and Nicholls on the road. They will host Lamar and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Privateers have only missed the Southland Tournament once since 2016.

The Privateer defense has moved up the ranks over the last couple of weeks. Since Mar. 29, New Orleans has made just two errors in their last 10 games. That translates to a .993 fielding percentage in that stretch. At one point, New Orleans trailed the Southland in fielding percentage at .960. They currently stand in fourth with a .973 fielding percentage.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT
HCU currently holds the last spot in the conference tournament with an 8-10 record. The defending Southland postseason champions took two of three from first place Northwestern State last weekend. The Huskies offense is led by Jack Walker who is hitting .338 with 26 RBI. Saturday starter, David Lopez has 50 strikeouts in 35 innings this season.
