Privateers Open Southland Tournament Against Lamar

GAME NOTES

LAKE CHARLES, La.
– The New Orleans Privateers will begin their Southland Tournament with a first-round matchup against the Lamar Cardinals. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Joe Miller Ballpark.
 
Privateer fans are encouraged to meet up at Walk-On's in Lake Charles (5313 Common Street), just south of Joe Miller Ballpark starting 2 hours prior to first pitch for complimentary appetizers courtesy of Privateer Athletics.  We'll meet up at Walk-On's before each Privateer game. 
 
STARTERS:
UNO: LHP-Brandon Mitchell vs. LU: LHP-Jacob Ellis
 
New Orleans is coming off their fourth consecutive series victory after defeating Nicholls in two-of-three games. The Privateers won the series finale 14-4 in eight innings to get out of the play-in game. Anthony Herron Jr. hit for the first cycle by a Privateer since 2018 and the eighth cycle in program history.
 
With the win, the Privateers finished 20-6 at Maestri Field on the season.
 
14 different Privateers hit a home run this season and 10 have at least 10 career home runs. New Orleans hit 83 homers as a team in the regular season, leading the Southland and 48th in the nation heading into the tournament.
 
Kasten Furr hit .387 over the last two weeks of the season, bolstering his average by 16 points in that stretch. Furr is also on an active streak of 53 consecutive games without an error committed at shortstop. Furr's fielding percentage sits at .996.
 
The Privateers are 9-10 all-time in the Southland Tournament. New Orleans has one championship game appearance in 2018 and has won the opening game of the tournament twice (2018 and 2022).
 
Five Privateers made the All-Southland postseason team. In the last three years, the Privateers have had 17 selections. New Orleans has never had three consecutive seasons of five or more postseason all-conference selections prior to this current stretch (2021-23).
 
Lamar defeated the Privateers in the series 2-1 during the regular season in Beaumont. The lone game the Privateers won was the Saturday contest on a complete game by Mitchell who is tabbed to start on Wednesday.
 
The Cardinals swept HCU in their last weekend of the regular season. They outscored the Huskies 30-9. Ryan Snell, who won Player of the Year honors, hit 17 home runs, second most in the conference. The rest of the team had 24 homers on the year.
 
In his start against the Privateers during the regular season, Ellis held New Orleans to two runs over seven innings.
