The Privateers gave up 12 runs on Opening Night but they flipped the script over the remainder of the weekend against a hard-hitting Georgia State lineup. New Orleans allowed just six runs over the next two days and won both games.
The pitching also limited free passes on the weekend. They surrendered eight walks through the first three games and recorded a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.5, which currently ranks 37
th in the nation through the weekend.
Delorbe already made his debut in 2024. He pitched three scoreless innings in relief as the Privateers rallied from a minor deficit to win 4-2 on Saturday. In Delorbe's last six regular season appearances of 2023, he did not allow a run in 8.1 innings.
New Orleans (2-1) was also drawing free passes with regularity. They walked 24 times and were hit six times by Panthers pitching. After the first weekend,
Miguel Useche and
Diego Villescas ranked in the top 30 in the nation in walks drawn.
The Privateers and Golden Eagles have played 110 times with Southern Miss leading the series 58-52. They played each other 12 times since
Blake Dean took over in 2016. Last year's March triumph marked the first win at Maestri Field against Southern Miss in that span.
In the preseason, the Golden Eagles were ranked 30
th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll.
