Miguel Useche Wins Southland Hitter of the Week Honors

FRISCO, TexasMiguel Useche earned Southland Hitter of the Week honors after a strong week at the plate where he helped the New Orleans Privateers to a 4-0 week and a conference sweep over the defending Southland champion, Nicholls Colonels.

This is the first weekly award for Useche as a Privateer in his career and the first for New Orleans this season.

For the week, Useche hit .412 (7-for-17) at the plate and collected four doubles. He also drove in nine runs for the Privateers in wins over Jackson State and Nicholls. The Privateers were one of two teams to sweep the conference opening series along with Lamar.

Useche's two-run double in the Friday game was instrumental in putting the Privateers ahead for good. After a spirited pitchers' duel between Colton Mercer and Jacob Mayers, the game was tied at 1-1 in the seventh. Useche came up and hit a two-run double to right field that scored Mitchell Sanford and Issac Williams to give the Privateers the lead for good.

The next day, Useche went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. He closed the series with a single, a walk and his first stolen base of the season.

For his career, Useche has 39 doubles. He is four away from tying Ted Wood for tenth place on the program's all-time doubles list. Scott Schwaner has the most career doubles by a Privateer with 54.

On the season, Useche is hitting .341 with seven doubles and 16 RBI. He also ranks 48th in the nation in walks and carries a .491 on-base percentage into the week.

The Privateers will open a four-game home stretch this week against Southern at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
