GAME NOTES
NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers, fresh off earning a road sweep in conference, will hit the field on Tuesday night when they face the Southern Jaguars. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Maestri Field.
New Orleans won all three games and made a big opening statement against the defending champion, Nicholls Colonels. The Privateers won the last game of the series 8-5.
Caleb Seroski and
Nathan Blasick combined for five scoreless innings to shut down the game. It was the first time a defending Southland champion was swept in the opening Southland series the next season since 2007.
Miguel Useche won his first career Southland Hitter of the Week award. Useche hit .412 with four doubles and nine RBI. One of his two doubles on Friday night put the Privateers ahead for good in the seventh inning of a 4-1 win. Useche has 39 career doubles which is four away from tying Ted Wood for tenth place on the program's career doubles list.
In his last six games,
Diego Villescas is hitting .435 (10-for-23). He has four multi-hit games in that stretch and has upped his batting average from .206 to .298. In that same span, Villescas has driven in five runs while batting ninth in the order.
The Privateers got a save in all three games as
Bryce Calloway earned the save on Saturday and
Nathan Blasick got the save in the Friday and Sunday game at Nicholls. Last season, the Privateers got a save in three consecutive games once (Mar. 8-11).
Matthew Maldonado,
Trey Usey and
Connor Macip each got a save.
New Orleans is 40-20 all-time against Southern. The Privateers have had incredible success at home with a 28-5 mark against the Jaguars. Under
Blake Dean, New Orleans is 14-3 versus Southern.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Southern swept Alcorn State last weekend to boost their conference record to 3-1. The Jaguars were only able to play one game in the opening weekend of conference against Texas Southern. Last weekend, Southern's bats overwhelmed the Braves as they outscored Alcorn State 43-11 in the three-game series.
Khyle Radcliffe leads the offense in every major statistical category this season. He's hitting .431 with five doubles, four homers, 22 RBI and 10 stolen bases. Radcliffe has a slugging percentage of .723 entering the week.
