SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers will take the trip to San Antonio this weekend when they face the UIW Cardinals at Sullivan Field. Friday and Saturday will start at 2 p.m. and the series finale goes at 1 p.m.
All games will be carried on ESPN+.
The Privateers (8-7, 2-4) picked up their second run-rule victory of the season when they defeated Xavier (La.) 17-7 on Tuesday night.
Canaan Clayton got the win and
Marco Mueses drove in five runs in the victory.
The Privateers are hitting .336 as a team with runners on base (87-259).
Bryce Calloway (12) and
Bryan Loriga (11) have the most hits with runners on to date. Also, the Privateers have scored a runner on third with less than two outs 70 percent of the time. Last season their success rate in those situations was 57.9 percent.
Grant Edwards has three straight quality starts (at least 6.0 IP and fewer than 3 ER allowed). Edwards also enters the weekend second in the Southland in strikeouts with 32, trailing only Brennan Stuprich of Southeastern who has 37.
New Orleans broke out a home run derby the last time they visited San Antonio. In three games (2023), the Privateers hit 11 home runs. That season, they went on to hit 90 homers, second most in a single season in program history only behind the 2008 team that hit 97.
The Privateers are 13-12 all-time against the Cardinals. 16 of the 25 meetings have taken place in San Antonio and the two teams have split those contests.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
UIW is looking for their first conference victory after having been swept the first two weekends by HCU and Northwestern State. The Cardinals (9-9, 0-6) split a pair of midweek games, winning 8-5 against UTSA and losing 18-3 to Tarleton State.
The Cardinals are second in the conference in batting average at .315 and second in home runs with 24. Rob Liddington leads the conference in homers with nine. Daniel Calabrese is the Southland leader in hits with 31.
