Privateers Begin Quest For Pelican Cup Against Tulane

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers begin a week of two opponents with trophies attached to the series starting with the first game of the Pelican Cup against the Tulane Green Wave on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Maestri Field.

The Privateers (12-10) lost a heartbreaker 10-9 on Sunday and went 1-2 over the weekend against Northwestern State. New Orleans rallied from a 6-0 deficit to take a lead in the eighth inning, but the Demons responded with three runs in the ninth then held off the Privateers in the final frame.

New Orleans ranks in the top 50 nationally in a few categories entering the week. They are 40th in batting average (.309), 39th in doubles per game (2.23) and 45th in the nation in double plays turned with 19 this season.

Bryan Loriga's numbers have been fantastic in every situation. He is hitting .440 with runners in scoring position and has scored a run successfully seven of eight times when a runner has been on third with less than two out. Loriga is also hitting .345 with two outs.

Sawyer Toney and Ira Austin have combined for 12.1 scoreless innings. Toney has thrown 7.2 shutout frames over his last three outings while Austin has gone 5.2 innings over his last seven outings without allowing a run.

The Pelican Cup was brought back in 2018 and Tulane currently holds the trophy. The Green Wave won the first two games of the series last year. New Orleans has won the trophy three times (2018, 2019, 2023).
