OFFICIAL SOUTHLAND RELEASE
NEW ORLEANS – For the second time in his career, University of New Orleans senior long jumper and member of the 4x100 relay team
Christopher Murphy was named the Southland Conference's Field Athlete of the Week on Wednesday afternoon by the league office.
Murphy was honored by the league for his strong performances in both the long jump and the 4x100 relay at LSU's Alumni Gold last Saturday. The Port Allen native finished fifth in the men's long jump with a leap of 7.58 meters on his second attempt.
The mark was the third-longest of his career, trailing only his personal best of 7.74 meters at last year's Southland Outdoor Championships and a jump of 7.69 meters at the 2023 Southland Outdoor Championships. It currently ranks No. 2 in the Southland, No. 16 in the South Central region, No. 27 in East Region qualifying, and No. 57 in the NCAA.
"CJ" was also part of an outstanding effort by the 4x100 relay team in Baton Rouge. The Privateers clocked a season-best time of 39.51 seconds with Murphy getting New Orleans off to a strong start in the opening leg.
Alongside
Madonna Favour,
Darryl George Jr., and
Daryl Bachmann, the Privateers' mark on Saturday currently ranks No. 2 in the Southland and No. 3 all-time in school history. It also ranks No. 7 in the South Central region, No. 18 in East Region qualifying, and No. 41 in the NCAA.
Murphy is the first Privateer to be named Southland Conference Field Athlete of the Week since Nicholaus Smith earned the award during the first week of February in 2023. Between the men's and women's programs, UNO student-athletes have earned the distinction nine times.
