Penultimate Series of Regular Season Commences as Privateers Host Nicholls

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers will play their final home series of the regular season when they take on the Nicholls starting on Friday. First pitch for the series opener is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Maestri Field.

SENIOR DAY
Senior Day festivities will precede the Saturday game scheduled for 2 p.m. 14 seniors will be honored ahead of the contest: Tyler Velino, Cade Mitchell, Brooks Byers, Jahlani Rogers, Zach Longshore, Dalton Hurst, Alexander Saunier, Diego Villescas, Matt Gonzalez, Bryan Loriga, Grant Edwards, Tristan Moore, Collin Loupe and Bryce Calloway.

New Orleans enters the weekend in seventh place in the Southland standings. They are two games up on their last two opponents (Nicholls and Texas A&M-CC). A sweep this weekend would guarantee a spot in the tournament.

Grant Edwards has been an innings eater and a strikeout artist. He's gone at least six innings in eight starts this season. His 82 strikeouts rank second in the conference heading into the weekend. Edwards has three starts with 10 or more strikeouts.

Four of the last five Privateer homers have accounted for the first runs of the game between games against HCU, Southern Miss and Jackson State. The Privateers have 55 home runs coming into the weekend with seven of those coming in the first inning.

Bryan Loriga has 16 doubles after adding two against Jackson State. He is currently in fourth in the Southland in that category, two away from Damian Ruiz who leads the conference with 18. The school record for doubles in a season is held by Glenn Osinski who had 26 in 1990.

The Privateers are 6-3 in the last nine meetings against Nicholls. That includes a three-game sweep at Didier Field last season in which the Privateers won all three games by three runs or fewer.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Nicholls is hitting .264 as a team on the season. The Colonels are led by Chase Jans and Carter Jenkins who both have a .318 batting average. Fisher Ingersoll leads the team in doubles with 11.

On the mound, the Colonels have a 6.25 team ERA. Alec Sparks has pitched to a 3.53 ERA in 10 starts and leads the team in innings (58.2), opponent batting average (.219) and strikeouts (56).

Brent Haring is in his first season at the helm after he was LSU's Director of Operations. He also had a stint at Associate Head Coach at BYU.
