CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers prepare for their final series of the regular season starting Thursday when they take on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders. The series opener is for 6 p.m. at Chapman Field.
New Orleans enters the last week in seventh place in the Southland standings. They are two games up on the teams tied for eighth (Nicholls and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi). New Orleans needs one win to make the tournament and one Nicholls loss to lock up the 7-seed.
Bryce Calloway has already picked up a lot of recognition for his season. He has been named a Midseason All-American by D1Baseball, Midseason Watch List for NCBWA Stopper of the Year and Bobby Bragan Award National Player of the Week. Calloway is hitting .397 with 14 homers, 55 RBI and has eight saves on the mound.
Hayden O'Dell had the longest relief outing by a Privateer this season when he went 6.1 innings out of the pen in the series finale against Nicholls. After a start at Southern Miss on Tuesday, O'Dell held the Colonels to two runs on three hits while picking up his second win of the season on Sunday.
The Privateers have hit 16 two-out homers this season after
Collin Husser added two this past weekend against Nicholls. Individually, Husser has a .417 batting average in 36 at-bats and 15 RBI with two outs this season.
New Orleans is 19-11 all-time against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and 10-3 at Chapman Field. The Islanders have won the series 2-1 in each of the last two seasons (2023 and 2024). The Privateers are 2-0 against the Islanders in the Southland Tournament.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is also looking to play their way into the tournament. They are tied for the final spot with Nicholls as both teams have a 9-18 conference record. Nicholls has the tiebreaker over the Islanders.
Scott Malone is in his 18
th season at the helm and has won 438 games in his career. This year, the Islanders have a 17-29 mark.
Austin Russell (.326) and Jackson Smith (.311) are the leading hitters for the Islander offense. Isaac Webb paces the team on the base paths with 18 steals in 20 attempts on the season. The Islanders have a team batting average of .256.
