FRISCO, Texas – Four New Orleans Privateers student-athletes were named to the Southland All-Academic Team which was released on Friday by the Southland Conference office.
Bryce Calloway,
Grant Edwards,
Alexander Saunier and
Matt Gonzalez all earned recognition for their work in the classroom.
Calloway, a First Team selection, carried a 3.5 GPA as an Interdisciplinary Studies major. The star two-way player adds this award to a growing list that includes being named All-American by two publications and First Team ABCA All-Region. Calloway hit 18 homers with a .390 batting average and had 11 saves on the mound.
Saunier was awarded the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship by the Southland Conference. A perfect 4.0 student as a Biological Sciences major, Saunier will be attending LSU School of Dentistry. Saunier hit .277 and scored 34 runs in 46 games played for the Privateers this season.
Gonzalez held a 3.9 GPA as an Interdisciplinary Studies major. The senior hit .336 for the Privateers and earned a Southland Hitter of the Week award in March. Gonzalez hit 10 doubles, five home runs and drove in 28 on the year. He also had the first five-hit game by a Privateer since 2019.
Edwards was the ace of the staff and earned Second Team All-Southland honors for his performance on the mound. He finished second in the conference in strikeouts with 92 on the season. Edwards carried a 3.8 GPA as an Interdisciplinary Studies major.
The four All-Academic honorees are the most in any season since the Privateers joined the Southland Conference. New Orleans has had 20 student-athletes receive All-Academic recognition.
Brennan Stuprich of Southeastern won Student-Athlete of the Year.
