NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers look to make their final push to get into the Southland Tournament field when they take on the Nicholls Colonels in their final road series of the regular season. First pitch for the series opener is on Friday at 6 p.m.
The Privateers lost a 4-2 decision to South Alabama which snapped a five-game winning streak for New Orleans in the series. The Privateers were ahead until the Jaguars hit two home runs in the sixth inning.
Miles Curley has put together solid splits this season. The junior transfer is hitting .407 with runners in scoring position. He also has 10 RBI with two outs despite missing nearly half the season. Also as a leadoff batter in an inning, Curley is hitting .417 entering the weekend.
William Andrade made his third relief appearance of the season on Wednesday night against South Alabama. In that role, Andrade has not given up a run in 6.2 innings and has recorded eight strikeouts while allowing four hits.
The Privateers are on the outside looking in at the top eight in the Southland standings, which will make the conference tournament. New Orleans is two games back of eighth with three weekends to go. Their remaining opponents are Nicholls (4th) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (9th).
Bryson Goff, who is slated to start on Friday night, had his first quality start of the season last week in a win against Lamar. Goff set a new season high with seven strikeouts over six innings against the Cardinals. He leads the pitching staff and is tied for ninth in the conference in wins.
New Orleans is one win away from collecting their 100
th victory all-time against Nicholls. The Privateers are 99-73 against Nicholls, but the Colonels lead the series 20-15 since the Privateers joined the Southland in 2014. New Orleans won two of three games in last season's series at Maestri Field.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Nicholls is four games up on ninth place Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with six to go and has their spot in the conference tournament nearly clinched. The Colonels have the second best team ERA in the conference at 4.61. Caston Thompson is top five in the league in OPS and home runs entering the weekend. Haden Luke ranks in the top ten in the conference in strikeouts with 55.
