VALDOSTA, Ga. -
Manuela Gomez and
Andrea Martin made the most of the University of New Orleans tennis team debuts, posting matching 3-0 records to lead the squad on the first day of the ITA South Regional at Valdosta State.
Manuela Gomez rallied from a set down to defeat Angy Cueller 4-6, 6-0, 10-5 to advance to the 'Round of 32' in singles' competition while Martin brushed off West Alabama's Dasha Popova to also advance.
In doubles' play, the pairing of Martin and Gomez picked up a pair of victories. The duo started by defeating Jacqualine Marsh and Luiza Sonnervig of West Florida 8-6 before sweeping Alina Nagel and Tina Trautmann of Valdosta State 8-0.
Martin and Gomez will play a 'Round of 16' doubles' match on Friday after their successful run, in addition to their singles' matches.
Other Privateers advancing to the 'Round of 32' in singles' play were
Hossam Meligy,
Kristina Martic and
Marta Sans.
Meligy was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Florida Tech's Mike Schmidt in the men's draw while Sans and Martic bested opponents from UWF in straight sets.
The UNO tennis team will continue play on Friday at 8 a.m. as consolation matches will begin to take place in addition to the continuation of main draw tournaments in both singles' and doubles' play.
