NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans jumped on Stillman for seven runs over the first three innings on way to a 12-3 victory at Maestri Field on Tuesday night.
UNO (2-2) put two runs on the scoreboard in their first appearance at the plate before posting a five-run third inning.
Beau Boudreaux went 2-for-3 in the game with three runs and two RBIs while factoring into both early scoring opportunities against Stillman (1-5). A product of Archbishop Shaw and Delgado, Boudreaux tripled in
Dan Perkins in his first at-bat before coming home on a
Clint Coleman single.
After the Tigers scored in the top of the third with the aid of a Privateer error, Boudreaux responded with UNO's first home run of the season in the bottom of the frame. The blast was the first of five hits in the inning which included RBI hits by
Jonathan Coco,
Tyler Hughes and
Andrew Bates.
Before the third frame was complete, Tigers' starter Tyler Colvert (0-1) had concluded his day and left the mound with a 7-1 deficit. Colvert allowed seven runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings while walking three in his first start of the season.
With the lead comfortably in hand, UNO victimized the Stillman bullpen for the remainder of the evening by scoring an additional five runs against the Tigers' relief pitchers.
The Privateer bats produced two runs in the fourth before adding another run in the fifth following a pair of hit batsmen and a wild pitch by the Tigers' Matt Peek. The scoring concluded for UNO with a
Blake LeBlanc two-run single in the sixth.
LeBlanc's single was the second of two hits in six at-bats. Other Privateers with multiple hits included Coco and Hughes with matching 2-for-4 efforts.
Christian Cale (2-0) earned the victory for the Privateers, allowing three runs – one earned – on six hits while providing five innings of work. The win was the second in two starts for the former John Curtis standout against teams that participated in the 2011 NCAA Division II tournament.
“Christian competed for us for five innings, gave up one earned run and he is going to have to be able to do that,” said head coach Bruce Peddie. “We are going to need all of our starting pitchers to go deep in the game and Christian, not having his best stuff – that was still a good sign for us.”
The UNO bullpen which entered the game with a 0.69 ERA through 13 innings continued their success. The quartet of
Stone Speer,
Kyle Zara,
Cameron Glendinning and
Garrett Manning each threw a scoreless frame apiece to lower the ERA further.
Stillman was led by Jarius Brown, who went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Trent Posey added a 2-for-3 outing for the Tigers with a run and RBI.
The Privateers will take another week off from action before resuming play at Mobile on Feb. 21 against Mobile at 2 p.m. The contest is the first of four straight on the road for UNO.
