ALEXANDRIA, La. – The University of New Orleans baseball team extended its win streak to five games by sweeping LSU-Alexandria in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
UNO (6-2) won the first game 6-5 before taking a 10-3 win in the second game against LSUA (3-8). Saturday's victories followed up a 6-5 win in the series opener for the Privateers late Friday night.
The victories improved UNO to 4-0 on the road, the first time the Privateers have won at least four in a row on the road at the start of a campaign since the 1979 squad featuring two-time World Series champion Randy Bush, former Chicago Cubs manager Mike Quade and LSU head baseball coach Paul Maineri rolled to a 5-0 road start.
Dan Perkins went 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs for the Privateers in the opening contest.
UNO rallied from a 3-1 deficit after the first two innings with a Steffan Farrell two-run double in the third, part of a three-run frame that put the Privateers ahead 4-3. Farrell's hit was part of a 2-for-4 effort in the contest.
After the Generals tied the game in the bottom of the third inning, Perkins blasted a two-run home that provided the visiting squad a lift.
Stone Speer (1-1) was the winner for UNO after throwing three innings while
Cameron Glendinning picked up the save after holding on to the victory, despite giving up a run over two frames.
Beau Boudreaux stepped up in the second game of the day, scoring three runs while just registering two official plate appearances. Farrell once more played a role, going 2-for-4 in the game to go along with two runs.
UNO's offense put across three runs in the opening at-bat as Boudreaux doubled in Perkins and later scored on an error.
Clint Coleman scored the third tally of the inning following a
Cameron Wheeless single.
The Privateers added a single run in the third before plating three more in the fourth. Boudreaux scored on a Coleman single while
Andrew Bates singled in two more runs.
With the lead well in hand, UNO tacked on an additional run in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
Jake Fabre (2-1) went the distance for the Privateers, allowing three runs on six hits over seven innings while striking out two. Barrett Hernandez took the loss for LSUA after giving up six runs on eight walks and four strikeouts over 3.1 innings.
“We are not playing great, but the team continues to improve,” said Privateer head coach Bruce Peddie. “We have to be a little better defensively and little better with timely hitting, but we are getting better everyday.”
“Our guys know we are not quite where we want to be. We have a couple of games before we get to West Florida that will give us an opportunity to make some adjustments. I am pleased and thrilled for our guys, who are happy with their results.”
UNO will play a pair of midweek contests, hosting Spring Hill at Maestri Field at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday before turning its attention to a contest at Stillman at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. The Privateers defeated Stillman 12-3 on Feb. 14.
