NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams posted matching 7-2 victories over Alcorn State on Wednesday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
The UNO men (1-1) seized the momentum in the dual against ASU (0-2) with a win at the No. 3 doubles' court.
After the first two doubles' matches off the court split to each team,
David Malmgren and
Dominik Kardell partnered for a 9-7 win over Max Tkachenko and Alexandr Lidzar to give the Privateers a 2-1 lead heading into singles' play.
Needing three wins to secure the dual, UNO ended up claiming 5 of 6 matches in the one-on-one competition to close out their victory.
Yoshikazu Ysa was the first off the court with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 against Vitali Vasiileuski with Kardell right behind him with a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Tkachenko at No. 5. Other singles' victories in completed matches came courtesy of
Hossam Meligy and Malmgren at the No. 2 and No. 4 positions, respectively.
In the other dual at the UTC, it was the UNO women's tennis team improving to 2-0 on the young season with their victory against ASU (0-2).
A clean sweep of the doubles' matches put the Privateers ahead early.
Sofija Karalic and
Kristina Martic were 8-2 winners at the No. 2 court over Kersten Vanem and Arielle Buchman for the first victory.
Manuela Gomez and
Marta Sans teamed for an 8-4 win at No. 1 with
Fanny Benincasa and
Juliet Labarthe completing the doubles' shutout with an 8-4 victory at No. 3.
With the advantage in their court, UNO never looked back in singles' competition.
Sans and Labarthe were straight set winners for the Privateers while Karalic and Benincasa needed a third set super-tiebreaker to post wins. Both three-set victories for UNO featured come-from-behind efforts as Karalic won 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 over Victoria Kozachuck at No. 4 with Benincasa taking a 5-7, 6-3, 10-3 decision over Buchman at the No. 5 position.
The action continues this weekend as the UNO men's tennis team will face nationally-ranked LSU on Friday at 8 p.m. in Baton Rouge with the women taking the court on Saturday at 10 a.m. against Middle Tennessee at the University Tennis Center.
