Privateers Resume Homestand Tuesday vs Nicholls State

Box Score UNO-VSU Box Score

NEW ORLEANS – Valdosta State claimed 2 of 3 games during its weekend visit to Maestri Field, taking the series against the University of New Orleans with an 11-1 win on Sunday afternoon.

The VSU (9-7, 2-1 Gulf South) held UNO (8-6, 2-3 GSC) to just five hits in the contest.

Blazers' starter Pete Whittingslow (1-1) allowed two hits during five scoreless frames on the mound before the Privateers put together three hits and a run against relief pitcher Nick Fogarty.  Benjamin Weil was able to retire the final two UNO batters to end the game after seven innings.

Miscues put the hosts in a hole early as VSU scored three times in the third inning.

With two outs on the board and without a run to their credit, the Blazers took advantage of consecutive Privateer miscues in the field. The errors coupled with three VSU hits provided the guests a 3-0 lead.

An error and three more hits allowed the Blazers to pad their lead with two additional runs in the fifth, closing the book on UNO starter Jake Fabre (3-2). Only one of the five runs scored against Fabre were earned while the right-handed pitcher struck out three.

VSU more than doubled their lead with a six-run seventh and carried an 11-0 lead into the bottom of the frame. The Privateers followed in their next at-bat with their lone tally of the game.

Kyle Denny and Zach Pohto produced back-to-back doubles with Pohto's extra-base hit scoring Denny. The duo along with Blake LeBlanc, Clint Coleman and Brandon Simon accounted for the UNO hits in the contest.

VSU was led offensively by Ryan Noelte, who went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Cameron Glisson, Austin Lawrence and Steven Groves all contributed two hits apiece for the Blazers.

The Privateers will return to action on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against Nicholls State. The contest will complete a four-game homestand for UNO.
