LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The first Gulf South Conference matches of the year went down as victories for the University of New Orleans tennis teams on Thursday afternoon.
The UNO men prevailed 5-4 against their counterparts from West Alabama while the women swept to a 9-0 victory over the Tigers.
In the men's match, the Privateers (2-2, 1-0 GSC) won 2 of 3 doubles' matches against UWA (5-2, 0-1 GSC).
The most critical point came at the No. 1 court where
Ricardo Campos and
Hossam Meligy edged past Nestor Vargas and Adam Drysdale 9-8.
The pair's victory provided momentum for singles' play where the teams split the six matches. Campos defeated Vargas 7-6, 6-4 at the No.1 court with
Vinay Kamineni and
David Malmgren also taking wins at No. 3 and No. 5 courts, respectively.
In the women's dual, the UNO women (3-1, 1-0 GSC) won their first match on the court since a Feb. 11 dual against Middle Tennessee.
The Privateers provided the knockout punch early against UWA (3-3, 0-1 GSC). All three doubles' tandems won, setting the stage for singles' action where UNO did not drop a set.
Juliet LaBarthe and
Fanny Benincasa improved to 4-0 in the dual season with their victories. No member of the Tigers' roster picked up more than six games in any single match.
The Alabama swing continues for the Privateers today at 2 p.m. against North Alabama before a trip to Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday.
