NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans tennis teams split with William Carey on Saturday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
The UNO women (8-2) claimed a 5-2 victory over their WCU (7-6) counterparts with the Privateer men (7-3) falling 5-2 to the Crusaders (7-2).
A strong start in doubles' play propelled the UNO women's team ahead. The Privateers claimed all three doubles' matches by 8-3 scores to pick up the doubles' point.
The momentum carried over to the singles' matches, where UNO won 4 of 6.
Juliet Labarthe and
Sofija Karalic were straight set winners at the No. 3 and No. 6 positions, respectively. Labarthe dispatched Petra Pesic 6-4, 6-3 with Karalic cruising 6-2, 6-1 over Joyce Oliviera.
The other wins were battles as
Marta Sans needed a third set to defeat Maja Vuzem 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 at the top position while
Fanny Benincasa won a first-set tiebreaker as part of a 7-6 (13-11), 6-0 defeat of Malin Collin at No. 5.
The men did not fare as well in doubles' play, dropping 2 of 3 matches. The lone victory in pairs' action came from
Hossam Meligy and
Ricardo Campos at the No. 1 court by an 8-6 score over Jody Claassen and Thomas Rizk.
Trailing 1-0 with the doubles' point out of the way, the Privateers could only muster two victories.
Vinay Kamineni won 7-6 (4), 6-2 over Rizk at the No. 3 court with
David Malmgren won his seventh in a row with a come-from-behind 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Marthinius Visser at No. 4.
Both UNO tennis squads will return to action on Sunday at 10 a.m. at the UTC against Auburn-Montgomery.
