MEMPHIS – The University of New Orleans baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader against Christian Brothers at Bucs Field.
UNO (12-13) won the opening contest 7-2 before falling to CBU (8-22) 7-1 in the second game. The twinbill split was the fifth in a row for the Privateers.
The first game turned in UNO's favor early as the guests capitalized on a six-run third inning.
The Privateers led 1-0 entering a third inning in which the first four batters reached base on singles. The consecutive base hits included RBI singles by
Beau Boudreaux and
Clint Coleman.
Jonathan Coco added a sacrifice fly for the Privateers, who totaled six hits in the inning. An RBI single by
Seth Laigast and two additional runs on a CBU (7-22) error completed the scoring in the frame, which gave UNO a 7-0 advantage.
The Bucs broke into the lead with a single run in the fourth and one more in the sixth against Privateer starter
Stone Speer (3-3). Speer allowed the two runs on three hits, while walking six and striking out five.
Cory Myers relieved Speer and held CBU off the scoreboard, yielding a single hit and fanning three during his three innings out of the bullpen. The duo held the Bucs to just four hits during the contest.
Boudreaux led UNO in the contest with three hits in four at-bats.
Cameron Wheeless added an additional three hits as the No. 2 through No. 5 hitters in the Privateer lineup combined to hit 10-of-19 against the Bucs.
Mac Cooley (0-3) took the loss for CBU. Cooley gave up all seven runs on 11 hits during eight innings. The Bucs' four hits contest were spread out over four different players.
In the second contest, the Bucs scored their runs in bunches on way to a victory.
CBU posted two runs in the second and four more in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. A fielding error in the top of the fourth enabled
Blake LeBlanc to post the Privateers' lone run.
The Bucs' scoring came off the arm of
Jake Fabre (3-5). CBU produced nine hits and six runs against Fabre, who struck out four in four innings.
A final run in the sixth for the Bucs provided Alex Sikes (4-2), all the backing he needed in getting his second straight complete game win. Sikes allowed just four hits in the contest, two of which came in the seventh inning.
Alan Wright, Cody Warren and Hunter Frey went 2-for-3 to lead CBU at the plate.
The teams are slated to complete their series with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
