Privateer Tennis Teams Win Third Straight, Defeat CBU

UNO Tennis Teams Improve to 3-0 in Gulf South Conference Play

NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams improved to 3-0 in Gulf South Conference play with a pair of 9-0 victories over Christian Brothers on Monday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
 
The UNO men (4-2, 3-0 GSC) did not drop a single set in dispatching CBU (0-4, 0-3 GSC).
 
Ricardo Campos and Hossam Meligy teamed for an 8-1 win at the No. 1 court with Vinay Kamineni and Dominik Kardell putting together an 8-1 victory at No. 2.
 
In singles' play, Campos defeated Kevin Johnson 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 with Meligy brushing aside Justin King 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2. The remaining of the matches were clean sweeps for the Privateers with Kamineni, David Malmgren and Yoshikazu Ysa winning 6-0, 6-0 over their foes.
 
In the women's dual, UNO (5-1, 3-0 GSC) posted its third straight 9-0 score against a GSC opponent. CBU dropped to 0-3 overall and within the GSC with the setback.
 
Marta Sans and Manuela Gomez took an 8-0 victory at the No. 1 court with Fanny Benincasa and Juliet Labarthe continuing their perfect spring with an 8-0 win at the No. 2 court.
 
As was the case in doubles' play, the Lady Bucs failed to pick up a single game against the Privateers in singles' action. Sans, Kristina Martic, Labarthe, Benincasa and Gomez all claimed wins in contested matches.
 
The competition gets tougher as the week continues.
 
Both UNO tennis teams will face nationally-ranked NAIA squads from Shorter at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. The Hawks are scheduled to join the GSC in 2012-13 and feature the No. 10 ranked men's team and No. 15 ranked team from the NAIA level per the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association computer rankings.
