NEW ORLEANS – The current run of success continued on Friday afternoon as the University of New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams prevailed over Gulf South Conference foe Delta State at the University Tennis Center.
Wins at the bottom three positions of the lineup lifted the UNO men (6-2, 4-0 GSC) to a 5-4 victory over DSU (3-5, 2-1 GSC) with the Privateer women (7-1, 4-0 GSC) rolling the Lady Statesmen (4-5, 2-2 GSC) by an 8-1 score.
The victories were the fifth in a row for each of head coach
Burzis Kanga's teams.
In the men's dual, UNO found itself in a difficult place as DSU claimed 2 of 3 doubles' matches. The lone victory in doubles' play came at the No. 1 position where
Hossam Meligy and
Ricardo Campos defeated Guillaume Lacour and Florian Mondoloni 8-3.
As play turned to singles, the disadvantage grew to 3-1 as the Statesmen picked up a win at the No. 3 position requiring the Privateers to find wins in four of the final five matches in order to win the dual.
UNO responded to the challenge as Meligy and
Dominik Kardell knotted the dual at three wins apiece with straight set victories at the No. 2 and No. 6 positions, respectively. These wins set the stage for the final three matches, which had reached a third set.
Yoshikazu Ysa and
David Malmgren stepped up to the plate to deliver the key victories.
Ysa defeated Christian Garcia 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 at the No. 5 court with Malmgren closing out his fifth straight win by a 7-5, 2-6, 6-0 result at No. 4 against Clement Depreeuw. A freshman on this year's squad, Malmgren is now 3-0 when playing into a third set.
The women's dual was significantly more lopsided for a Privateer women's team that with a fifth straight win, continues to build on its longest winning streak since taking seven in a row on way to a 14-5 campaign in 2005.
UNO posted wins in all three doubles' matches, not yielding more than three games in any pro-set. The victories improved the team's cumulative doubles' record this spring to 20-4.
Singles' play was not much different with DSU picking up its lone win at the No. 5 position. The defeat in singles' action was the first in 24 matches against a GSC opponent this year for the Privateers.
Outside of the loss, the remaining five members on the UNO roster won in straight sets highlighted once more by wins by
Juliet Labarthe and
Fanny Benincasa at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively.
Labarthe's 6-1, 6-1 win over Sandra Tora and Benincasa's 6-0, 6-0 victory against Hidemi Mayeshiro provided the pair their eighth straight singles' win of the spring. Other winning streaks for UNO singles' players included
Kristina Martic and
Andrea Martin, who won their fifth and fourth in a row, respectively.
The UNO men's and women's tennis teams will continue their homestand with a match at 11 a.m. on Sunday against Jackson State.
