MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of New Orleans baseball team pounded out 14 hits a 6-5 loss to Christian Brothers on Sunday at Bucs Field.

UNO (12-14) came up just short against CBU (9-22) by stranding 12 runners in the contest, including the potential game-tying run on third base in both the eighth and ninth innings.

The Bucs jumped ahead 3-0 in the first inning against Privateer starter Christian Cale (3-1), who exited after the frame. Cale pitched less than five innings in a start for the first time after making his first appearance since Mar. 17.

UNO responded with two runs in the second as Zach Liberto and Jonathan Coco produced RBI singles in an inning featuring a wild pitch and error in the field by CBU. The Bucs built their lead back up to three with a pair of runs in the fourth.

Each team scored a run in the fifth with the Privateers stringing together four straight singles in the eighth to plate two additional tallies. With Liberto at third base and representing the tying run with a single out on the board in the eighth, two consecutive UNO batters were retired.

A fourth CBU error in the ninth inning placed Coleman on third and Zach Pohto on second with two outs in the ninth before Coco flied out to right field to end the contest.

For the game, Liberto went 3-for-3 to lead the Privateers with Coleman contributing three hits in five at-bats. Pohto, Coco and Blake LeBlanc had two hits apiece for UNO.

Solid bullpen efforts were turned in by Kyle Zara, who allowed two hits and a run in three innings while Garrett Manning yielded a single hit and no runs during the eighth inning.

Jake Garbuzinski (2-4) was the winning pitcher for CBU, allowing three runs – one earned – on eight hits in six innings. The sophomore struck out six while walking four.

Jon-Michael Davis picked up his third save by pitching three innings of relief and thwarting Privateer threats to tie or take the lead in the final two innings. Josh Hopkins and Mac Cooley had two hits apiece for the Bucs.

UNO will return home to host Mobile at Maestri Field on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Privateers defeated the Rams 5-4 on Feb. 21 on the road in the previous meeting between the teams.
