CLEVELAND, Miss. – The University of New Orleans baseball team continues its 10-game stretch of games on the road this weekend with a series at No. 16 Delta State.
First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is at 3 p.m. with a single game on tap for 2 p.m. on Sunday. All three games will have live stats and audio available on GoStatesmen.com.
UNO (13-19) displayed patience at the plate and walked 11 times in a 9-4 victory at William Carey on Wednesday night. The 11 walks equaled a season-high for the ball club, which had not been walked more than five times since a Mar. 20 contest against Nicholls State.
Blake LeBlanc led the team by being issued three walks. In his role as leadoff hitter, LeBlanc set the table for
Zach Pohto and
Cameron Wheeless, who each tallied three RBIs in the contest.
Also aiding the cause was
Clint Coleman, who now has the team's longest hitting streak at five games. The outfielder has eight hits in his last 19 at-bats for a .421 batting average that has bolstered his season average to .330.
The starting pitchers for the Privateers last week were
Jake Fabre (3-6, 5.54 ERA),
Stone Speer (3-4, 4.72) and
Cory Myers (1-2, 5.96). Fabre and Speer each pitched an inning of scoreless relief on Wednesday, supporting the efforts of starter
Alex Smith (1-0, 2.89).
DSU (24-10) has won 11 of 16 games at home this season. The Statesmen had dropped two in a row before defeating Arkansas-Monticello 11-3 on the road this past Tuesday.
Head coach Mike Kinnison is 23 games shy of 700 wins in his 16
th season at the helm of the DSU program, which is led at the plate by a .367 batting average supplied by Jordan Chovanec. Ben Kinglsey is second on the team with a .344 batting average and paces the team in hits (45) and RBIs (32).
The weekend rotation has not changed for the Statesmen throughout the Gulf South Conference season. Aaron Newcomb (6-2, 2.75 ERA) lead the trio that includes Josh Brantetter (2-2, 3.55) and Colton Mitchell (4-0, 4.05).
This weekend's series will be followed by games for the Privateers at McNeese State and Southern on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. UNO does not return home until an Apr. 27 contest against Tougaloo.
