CLEVELAND, Miss. – No. 16 Delta State swept the University of New Orleans on Saturday, utilizing a walk-off single to win the opener 3-2 before receiving a perfect game in the second contest for a 4-0 win.
In the first game, DSU (26-10) broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the ninth inning. With two on and two outs Statesmen catcher Jon Carnahan singled to left center to score teammate Ben Kinglsey. The hit was the second in five at-bats for Carnahan.
UNO (13-21) relief pitcher
Kyle Zara surrendered the run after entering the contest in the ninth. Zara had relieved Privateer starter
Stone Speer, who scattered six hits over eight innings with a single earned run allowed.
UNO jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first when
Blake LeBlanc led off the contest with a double and would later score on a sacrifice fly by
Cameron Wheeless. DSU knotted the game with a run in the third before going ahead 2-1 in the fifth.
Beau Boudreaux stole home in the seventh on a double steal with
Clint Coleman. Boudreaux had walked and Coleman followed with a single to lead off the frame, part of a 2-for-4 afternoon for Coleman, who added two steals.
The winning pitcher for DSU was Brandon Hardin (2-5), who retired both batters he faced in 0.2 innings. Hardin relieved Aaron Newcomb, who allowed two runs on five hits in 8.1 innings.
The nightcap featured Statesmen pitcher Colton Mitchell (5-0) throwing the first complete game against the Privateers. Mitchell struck out seven in joining Scott Hurst of Louisiana-Lafayette on Apr. 4, 1983 and Western Illinois hurler Steve Bartels on Mar. 6, 1989 in being responsible for a no-hitter by a UNO opponent.
DSU scored two runs in the second and a third in the third against Privateer starter
Cory Myers (1-3). Myers allowed three runs on five hits, while striking out three.
Cory Hoffman threw the final three innings in relief of Myers, giving up the final run of the contest in the fifth.
Michael Vinson was 3-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Statesmen in the nightcap.
