NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans scored 10 runs by the completion of the fifth inning en route to a 10-4 victory over Tougaloo on Friday night at Maestri Field.
UNO (15-27) tallied 13 hits in the contest and plated runs in four of the first five innings to build a 10-1 advantage. The lead would hold up for the Privateers, who took advantage of two walks and four batters being hit by pitch.
Zach Liberto and
Cameron Wheeless both contributed three hits to lead the UNO offense. Liberto scored two runs in the contest and was joined by
Tyler Hughes,
Andre Damiens and
Jake Palmisano in touching home plate twice.
The Privateers scored a single run in the first and two more in the third.
UNO's lead grew to 6-0 in the fourth with three runs, ending the evening for TU (4-41) starter Rodney McKay (1-9). The six runs scored against McKay were all earned after the pitcher yielded eight hits.
TU got on the scoreboard for the first time in the top of the fifth before the Privateers responded with a four-run fifth inning to take a 10-1 lead.
UNO did not add another tally to its count through the final pitch. The Bulldogs were able to plate three runs over the final third of the game, scoring a single run in the seventh and two more in the ninth.
Stone Speer (4-4) was the winning pitcher for the Privateers, yielding a single run on five hits over five innings. The outing was the eighth straight start with more than five innings of mound time for the junior.
Relief pitchers
Alex Smith and
Kyle Blancaneaux threw one scoreless inning apiece. Blancaneaux's frame featured three strikeouts of Bulldog hitters.
The teams will continue their series on Saturday at 2 p.m. with a doubleheader. Fans are encouraged to arrive at Maestri Field early as Senior Day festivities will occur at approximately 1:40 p.m.
