MOBILE, Ala. – An old Sun Belt Conference baseball rivalry is renewed this weekend as the New Orleans Privateers head to South Alabama for a three-game series beginning Friday.
First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. with subsequent games slated to begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. USAJaguars.com will have live video and statistics with audio coverage available on WNSP.com.
UNO (0-5) enters the series after being swept in a Tuesday doubleheader by Arkansas.
Through the season's first five games, several freshmen have shined for the Privateers including
Chaz Boyer,
Jordan Fontenelle and
Blake Prest.
Boyer is UNO's top hitter on the season with a .300 batting average. Boyer's production to date includes the team's lone triple, two runs and stolen bases in four of five games.
Fontenelle and Prest have delivered on the mound after both prepped at nearby Holy Cross. Fontenelle has posted a 3.60 ERA in five innings of work with Prest (0-1, 2.16 ERA) being called upon last minute to start in Tuesday's second game, holding Arkansas to a single run in five innings of work.
Prest's effort against the Razorbacks has moved the freshman into the weekend rotation, where he will start on Sunday. Head coach Bruce Peddie will send
Stone Speer (0-0, 4.50 ERA) and
Alex Smith (0-1, 6.43 ERA) to the mound in the games prior to Prest.
The trio of UNO starting pitchers will seek to quiet a USA (4-0) program that is hitting .331 as a squad.
The Jaguars have totaled 45 runs over four games in sweeping a three-game series against Stephen F. Austin before adding a mid-week win over Alabama State on Wednesday night. Drew Cofield (.444 ) and Nolan Earley (.417) lead a USA program which has seen all eight regulars in the lineup score at least two runs and produce an RBI.
This weekend, the Jaguars anticipate starting right-handed Anthony Izzio (0-0, 8.10 ERA) on Friday followed by southpaw Jacob Noble (1-0, 0.00 ERA) and the right-handed Jarron Cilo (0-0, 4.15 ERA). USA's pitching has a combined 2.75 ERA with 43 strikeouts in comparison to 10 walks.
Historically, the Jaguars lead the all-time series 84-58 over the Privateers. The teams first met in 1970 with the most recent series of games coming in 2010 when the institutions competed together in the SBC.
Following this weekend's slate of games, UNO will continue its 13-game stretch away from the Lakefront by visiting Tulane on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The contest against the Green Wave is the first of four on the docket this season in the First NBC Bank Cup.
