Video Highlight - Boyer RBI single scores Perkins + Broussard
NEW ORLEANS – For the second night in a row, New Orleans produced a late inning score to defeat Alcorn State 7-5 on Wednesday night at Wesley Barrow Stadium.
Roughly 24 hours after
Chaz Boyer scored the game-winning run, the freshman outfielder once more played a role in a UNO (3-14) victory. With two outs and runners on second and third, Boyer beat out a throw from the second baseman for an infield single that plated a pair of Privateer runs.
Boyer was 2-for-4 with three RBIS and two runs for the contest.
Raymond Winter (2-0) was the pitcher of record for the UNO, allowing a single hit while striking out three ASU (2-17) players in two innings of relief.
The eighth inning scores came against Braves' relief pitcher Justin Lemond (0-2), who allowed the two runs on three hits in four innings of work. The runs conceded by Lemond allowed the Privateers to break a 5-all tie after ASU had initially rallied from a 5-1 deficit after the first four innings.
The Braves' comeback was made possible by a three-run home run by Josh Powell in the seventh inning. ASU had previously plated runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
UNO built its 5-1 lead with a four-run fourth inning. The Privateers showed patience at the plate in the frame, taking advantage of three walks and a wild pitch from ASU starter Ryan Fuentes.
An infield single by Boyer with the bases loaded plated the first run before
Zach Pohto singled in a pair of runs. The final tally of the inning came when Boyer crossed home on a grounder by
Zacary Hawkins.
Fuentes exited the contest in the contest after giving up the four run inning, allowing five runs total on seven hits. Across the field, Fuentes' UNO counterpart
Alex Smith yielded just two runs on two hits over five innings. Smith threw just 61 pitches, part of a planned pitch count by the Privateer coaching staff.
Pohto was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs to join Boyer in the multi-hit club for UNO. Six different players collected a hit for the Braves, who were held without a hit for the first three innings by Smith.
The Privateers will head to Houston for four games over the weekend, beginning with Baylor on Friday at 2 p.m. UNO will play BU twice with a pair of games against host UH over the course of three days.
