NEW ORLEANS –Georgia State swept Saturday's doubleheader at Wesley Barrow Stadium, winning the opener 5-4 before taking the nightcap 6-5 in 11 innings.
The teams will close out the series at 12 p.m. on Sunday
GEORGIA STATE 6-5 NEW ORLEANS, 11 INNINGS (Second Game)
GSU (24-13) rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the nightcap for the victory in extra innings.
The Panthers did not lead until the 11
th inning when Drew Shields scored on a wild pitch by UNO (5-31) relief pitcher
Raymond Winter (2-3). Shields had singled with one out and advanced to third on a Joey Roach base hit before the wild pitch to complete the rally.
GSU had previously scored in the sixth inning to pull within two before adding runs in the eighth and ninth to knot the game. The score in the ninth came when Privateer
Garrett Manning hit the Panthers' Chad Prain with the bases loaded. An error coupled with some timely hitting allowed GSU to be in position to tie the contest.
Prior to the ninth,
Daniel Martinez threw a career-high eight innings and left the contest was a 5-4 advantage. Martinez allowed four runs – three earned – on six hits while striking out four.
UNO built up a 4-0 lead while Martinez held GSU without a run for the game's first three innings.
The Panthers posted a run in the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-1 before UNO extended their advantage back to four with a single tally in the bottom of the fourth.
In the first, the Privateers scored a pair of runs as
Chaz Boyer walked and advanced to second on a
Zach Liberto single to begin at-bat. A
Jonathan Coco sacrifice fly plated Boyer with
Reese Kanter singling in Liberto to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
A Liberto single was followed by back-to-back doubles by Coco and Kanter, leading to a pair of runs in the third to increase the Privateers' advantage to 4-0.
After GSU scored their first run in the fourth, UNO responded in the bottom of the inning as Kanter was hit by pitch with the bases loaded by relief pitcher Andrew Fessler. Fessler calmed down and ended up with 6.2 innings of relief, allowing the lone run on three hits.
Zacary Hawkins was 3-for-5 to lead the Privateers in the contest with Kanter and Liberto tallying a pair of hits apiece.
GSU received two hits from Shane Gordon and Chase Ratfield with Shields collecting hits in each of three plate appearances. The Ratfield hit production included a two-run blast in the sixth.
GEORGIA STATE 5-4 NEW ORLEANS (First Game)
In the opener, GSU plated the go-ahead run in the eighth to defeat the Privateers.
First baseman Nic Wilson reached third in the inning on a fielder's choice as teammate Chad Prain worked a rundown involving six different UNO fielders between third and home plate. Wilson scored on a Caden Bailey two-out single
The game-winning run was scored against Privateer relief pitcher
Andrew Shirley (0-3). Shirley allowed the run on two hits while throwing a pair of innings in relief of starter
Blake Prest. Prest matched his career-high with seven innings throw, conceding four runs – three earned – on five hits.
Prior to the go-ahead score, UNO battled back from a 4-0 deficit. The visiting Panthers scored a run in the first, second, fourth and fifth frames to grab their advantage.
Tim Broussard and Boyer singled for UNO in the fifth inning. The duo would come across the plate with a single out on the board when Liberto tripled to cut the deficit in half. Liberto represented the third run for the Privateers in the inning, reaching home on a
Zach Pohto grounder.
The three runs and three hits for UNO in the fifth were followed an inning later by the tying score.
Andre Damiens doubled in Coco, who led off the inning with a single.
Jerry Stuckey (3-1) picked up the win, keeping the Privateers from adding to their total with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. Matt Rose walked the bases loaded in the ninth before retiring Hawkins to earn his fourth save of the season.
Raffield was 2-for-4 to lead GSU while Coco was the top hitter for UNO, collecting a pair of hits in four at-bats.
