NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans women's tennis team made short work of crosstown foe Loyola on Friday afternoon, completing a 7-0 victory in just under two hours at the University Tennis Center.
The win was the third in a row UNO (6-10), giving the squad their longest winning streak of the season. The result also made a winner of Privateer assistant coach
Piyanart Engineer over her husband Zubin, the head coach of LU (3-9).
In doubles' play, UNO only conceded one game when
Kristina Martic and
Soledad Calderon Arroyo defeated Meghan de Baroncelli and Frances Bonin 8-1 at the No. 1 position. The victory was the third in a row for Martic and Calderon, who improved to a team-best 8-4 during the dual campaign.
The Privateers completed the doubles' sweep courtesy of
Marta Sans and
Fanny Benincasa at the No. 2 court with
Paula Jimenez Sanchez and
Victoria Svensson in the No. 3 position.
When play moved to singles', not much changed as UNO claimed the bottom four courts in 6-0, 6-0 fashion. The victories for Calderon at the No. 3 position, plus Benincasa and Jimenez at the No. 4 and No. 5 courts, respectively were the trio's third in a row.
Sans posted a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 1 court over de Baroncelli with Martic dispatching Kanda Borgononi 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 2 position.
The Privateers will seek their fourth straight victory on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the UTC against NAIA nationally-ranked foe Auburn-Montgomery. Admission is free.
