The University of New Orleans baseball team (3-0) banged out 32 runs and 13 extra base hits. Now, the Privateers turn their attention to the first mid-week and road game of the season against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (3-0) on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Â
The Privateers had strong performances throughout the lineup at the plate.
Kyle Bracey led the way with eight hits and six runs along with a homer and four RBIs.
Aaron Palmer had six RBIs in the season opener against Alcorn State and New Orleans hit four homers as a team, which is already halfway to their 2015 total.
Â
The starters performed well throughout the weekend.
Shawn Semple and
Riley Hodge combined for 17 strikeouts and
Jordan Priddle pitched six innings in his season debut. In the bullpen,
Daniel Martinez picked up a pair of saves including a 2.1-inning save against Louisiana Tech last Sunday.
Â
Defensively, New Orleans played a clean first three games, committing just two errors. "We harped on it all year for us to be successful and continue winning we've got to play defense," said Coach
Blake Dean. "We've done a very good job of focusing on defense and making sure they make 27 outs just 27 outs."
Â
Samuel Capielano contributed both at the plate and in the field. At the dish, Capielano went 5-for-12 and scored two runs. In the field, he had 10 assists with no errors. Last season, Capielano missed half of the year with an ankle injury.
Â
"Sammy was hurt last year and his freshman year he was playing at shortstop," said Dean. "He's had time to clear his mind and get healthy and he's got Aaron at short which makes it easier for him at second. He's getting stronger and maturing and the game is slowing down and he's making it look a little easier."
Â
The Privateers and Golden Eagles have played 98 times in program history and have split those meetings down the middle. Last year, New Orleans and Southern Miss won on each other's home field. The Privateers took a 7-6 decision in Hattiesburg and the Golden Eagles won a 6-5 contest in extra innings at Maestri Field at First NBC Ballpark.
Â
New Orleans is scheduled to throw LHP
Bryan Warzek who will make his first collegiate start. Southern Miss will throw RHP Hunter Stevens. The Golden Eagles were scheduled to play two mid-week games, but their Tuesday contest against Louisiana-Monroe has been postponed due to inclement weather.
Â
Scott Berry is in his seventh season with the Golden Eagles and has collected 211 wins to date. Southern Miss started their year off with a three-game sweep over Eastern Illinois. Chuckie Robinson hit .625 for the weekend and Taylor Braley cranked three of the Golden Eagles' nine home runs.
